What is it?
REM (rapid eye movement) sleep is the deepest stage of the sleep cycle usually entered into the first 90 minutes of falling asleep and occurs several times throughout the night. Other breathing becomes irregular, our heart rate increases, our brain becomes active and is when our dreams occur.
What does it do?
REM sleep impacts the functioning of the brain area involved in managing emotional reactions and impulse control. It is also associated with a decrease in brain activity linked to anxiety, stress and fear.
Why do we need it?
REM sleep is essential for processing, maintenance and repair of information and is thought to play a role in memory consolidation, the synthesis and organisation of cognition, and mood regulation.
The REM cycles of sleep are fascinating, and we are still learning about how they affect our waking lives. For now, dreaming and the healing your sleep cycles bring.
